CONNECT ONCE · SAVE FROM CHAT

Connect ChatGPT or Claude

Shadow Study is a study hub for practice exams you create with ChatGPT or Claude. Connect it once, ask for an exam in chat, and the AI saves it straight to your library, where you practice and follow your progress.

What you’ll need

You need a Shadow Study account with active study access. Create one on the sign-in page with Google, Microsoft, or your email; registration may be closed at times.

You also need a Claude or ChatGPT account that can add a custom connector. In Claude, every plan can add one; the Free plan allows one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise plans an Owner first adds it under Organization settings → Connectors, then you connect it. In ChatGPT, it needs Developer mode, which can depend on your account and workspace policy. If you can’t find these options, sign in to Shadow Study: its Guide shows other ways to create exams that work in any chat.

  1. Add the connector to your AI app

    Connector URL: https://shadow.study/mcp

In Claude, open Customize → Connectors → + → Add custom connector, enter the URL, and connect it to your account. Enable the connector in your chat. In ChatGPT’s current developer setup, open Settings → Security and login → Developer mode, add an MCP server in ChatGPT Plugins, then select it in a Work chat.

  2. Sign in and approve the connection

When your AI app connects, sign in to Shadow Study and choose Allow connection on the approval page. Check the requested permissions: new connections can save exams and read completed results, including archived exams. You can turn results sharing off for all connected apps in Profile and keep exam saving. Existing import-only connections need reconnecting to allow result reads.

  3. Ask for an exam

Start a new AI chat, share your material or topic, and ask: “Create a practice exam from this and save it to Shadow Study.” The connector supplies the exam instructions to your AI and sends the exam directly to your library. You should receive a short confirmation and library link, not an exam JSON response. Claude may ask for approval once to get the instructions and again to save. Choose Allow once for each if you asked for this exam.

  4. Check the exam in your library

A direct save has no Preview step, so open your library and check the new exam’s questions and explanations against your material before practicing.

  5. Practice what you missed

With a connected AI app, choose Create follow-up practice on a completed exam in Library to use its latest completed attempt, or select specific completed runs in History and choose that action. Pick your connected ChatGPT or Claude account. The new chat includes your request; enable or select the Shadow Study connection there if needed, then press Send. The AI reads the full selected results, including correct answers, asks you to confirm the focus, question count and difficulty, and saves the new exam after confirmation. If signing in clears the request, finish signing in, return to Shadow Study and click the provider link again. Results sharing must be on in Profile; older saving-only connections need reconnecting with results access. Oversized selections are refused without cutting results.

Claude and ChatGPT change their menus and plans, so these steps and plan requirements, checked September 2026, may be out of date. The Claude connector guide and ChatGPT connection guide always have the current steps.

If something goes wrong

If the AI cannot confirm whether a save worked, check your library first. Then tell it whether to retry; a retry after you delete an exam can create a new copy. To disconnect an app or stop sharing results, open Profile in Shadow Study. Changing your password or signing out everywhere disconnects all AI apps. For anything else, see Support.

What a connected app receives, and how we handle it, is described in the Privacy Notice.
